Stop Adlington New Town

Who are we?

We are a group of Adlington residents seeking to stop the Adlington new town proposal which is to build between 14,000 - 20,000 houses on Green Belt land with the associated destruction of habitat for our local wildlife.

After the initial shock of learning from a national press announcement that our small village of just over 1,000 inhabitants is being earmarked for a New Town that might contain in excess of 50,000 inhabitants and cause the destruction of the countryside and wildlife which most of us love dearly, we have now mobilised to oppose the proposed development.

The proposal if it proceeds will destroy good quality agricultural land set inside often ancient field patterns, lose local farmers their livelihoods, destroy valuable habitat and significantly add to pollution.

Our Statement

The government “warmly welcomes” all 12 proposals for New Towns one of which involves the destruction of 970 hectares of Green Belt.

Adlington was named as a village in the Domesday Book and is home to around 1000 souls, a rural community where night skies are visible. The settlement has been chosen by the New Town Taskforce as a proposed site for up to 20,000 houses to be built on farming land between existing towns Macclesfield and Poynton.

Adlington New Town if approved by the Government would affect 15 farms and destroy 970 hectares (2,300 acres) of Strategic Green Belt comprising fields for grazing and arable together with ancient hedges and bluebell woods. Strategic Green Belt is designed, amongst other things, to prevent urban sprawl and to encourage urban regeneration of derelict land. The proposal has been made despite there being many brown field sites in East Cheshire and Manchester in dire need of regeneration.

The fields and woods, some of the most ancient in the UK, have a rich habitat: herds of deer, setts of badgers, red speckled woodpeckers including the endangered great crested newt.

Once Greenbelt of this size is lost it is lost forever, we have a duty up to future generations to stop this. If it happens here all Greenbelt is under threat.

Our Campaign

We are opposing Adlington New Town on the following grounds:

  1. The destruction of Strategic Green Belt
  2. The destruction of habitat for wildlife
  3. The closing of farms and the impact on food supply
  4. The inadequate location and poor infrastructure

This proposal will have a significant detrimental effect on our nearby town Macclesfield where investment is severely lacking - killing an old town to create a new town.

Our neighbouring villages, Poynton, Bollington and Prestbury will be changed in character for ever, the infrastructure, both rail and roads are stretched now - it is not unusual to take over 30 mins to travel 4 miles by road - another 20,000 cars will cause unimaginable grid lock.
